One of the greatest things I did for my gut health, after years of dysbiosis, was make and consume a 36-hour super-gut, fermented yogurt. This really is a tutorial and my experience with Dr. William Davis SuperGut long-ferment yogurt for optimal gut health. It is driven to support SIBO and eliminate the effects it has on our health.
How does it work?
This yogurt is made with specific strains to help specific gut health problems. By hand selecting the desired strains, along with the 36-hour ferment, you are getting parts per trillion with every serving. It is like flooding your gut with the best flora for you to bring back a balanced microbiome.
This article will be talking about how to make 2 specific yogurts. The first is a yogurt targeted for gut rebalance with SIBO (small intestinal bacteria overgrowth), but it is also great for candida overgrowth, gut inflammation, and an unbalanced gut due to parasites.
The second yogurt is great for maintaining gut health or an easier version, by using kefir. This takes the great benefits of your favorite kefir and turns it into a stronger, more probiotic per serving.
What you will need:
Yogurt maker, I use this one https://amzn.to/3MAaxTM
Half & Half
Selected probiotic strains or kefir
Inulin Powder
Let’s chat probiotic strains:
The 3 main strains this yogurt is made of are Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus gasseri, and Bacillus coagulans. (Note in my IG tutorial attached to this blog, I was out of L. gasseri so I substituted for my infant probiotic strain from Smidge. You can do and make this however you want- just know that these specific 3 strains are designed to fight off SIBO bacteria and bring balance back to the gut.)
L. reterui is the ultimate healer in the gut. It repairs the gut lining, increases oxytocin signaling (the feel-good hormone), and suppresses inflammatory microbes without harming your microbiome.
L. gasseri is the ultimate balancer in our guts. It works in our intestines by reducing gas-producing bacteria, lowering intestinal inflammation, improving gastric emptying, and decreasing abdominal distension and pressure.
B. coagulans is a strong spore-biotic that survives stomach acid and bile, making it throughout the intestines to heal. It is great for strengthening the intestinal barrier, helps with stool consistency, and crowds out pathogenic organisms.
How to make:
For your initial batch of yogurt, you will need:
10 tablets of BioGaia Gastrus tablets or 2 tbs of L. reuteri yogurt [linked here]
1 capsule Lactobacillus gasseri BNR17 or 2 tbs L. gasseri yogurt [linked here]
1 capsule Bacillus coagulans GBI-30,6086 or 2 tbs B.coagulans yogurt [linked here]
2 tbs inulin powder [linked here]
1 quart half-and-half
In a bowel crush and combine the contents of probiotics, then add inulin powder and 2 tbs of half-and-half. Stir until dissolved, and a thick medium is created. Add in the remaining half-and-half and stir. Place your mixture in your yogurt maker of choice and ferment at around 106F for 36 hours.
To make future batches, take 2 tbs of yogurt or whey from the previous batch and mix with a quart of half-and-half and inulin powder.
My personal experience eating this yogurt for a year now:
Less bloating and gut discomfort after I eat a meal
My hair scans come back showing my gut is healing, and a massive decrease in resistance organisms
Inches off my waist!
Cleared my skin of acne, rosacea, and periodontal flare-ups. Not to mention helped completely eliminate my eczema
Better mood and stamina throughout the day
This yogurt has truly been such a big part of my healing journey. Plus, it saves so much money making your own yogurt at home- after the initial start-up costs with probiotics and a yogurt maker.
Check out my IG tutorial for more info on how I make this yogurt!
(I am dying that after I added a still photo for the reel cover, IG decided to do its thing and land on this one of my mouth open. Tell me I am not the only one this happens to! haha Enjoy!)
You can learn more about this recipe and the benefits of healing SIBO by reading the book SuperGut found here.
If you are curious to know if you have resistance organisms like candida, parasites, mold, or bacteria, let’s connect, and I can show you more about the hair scans I do.
