Camu camu is one of the most concentrated whole food forms of Vitamin C in the world. A small red berry found in the Amazon is considered a super food for all it does for our health. Here is a full breakdown of Camu Camu and why I prefer to take Camu Camu over Vitamin C supplements when my body needs the extra immune support:
Since Camu Camu is high in Vitamin C, it plays a crucial role in maintaining a strong immune system. Vitamin C is crucial in fighting off disease and illnesses. But what makes Camu Camu even stronger is the antioxidants that help support our cells at the mitochondrial level. This is why I take Camu Camu over Vitamin C supplements, it is a natural vitamin C complex, not just ascorbic acid. Whole food vitamin C has the following benefits:
Supports the immune system
Enhances iron absorption
Helps regenerate antioxidants like glutathione
Easier to digest than synthetic ascorbic acid
Camu Camu contains polyphenols and flavonoids, which help with things like:
Reducing oxidative stress
Stabilizes mast cells (this histamine)
Supports vascular health
Protects Mitochondria
Due to these additional compounds, it helps far beyond the immune system and has a large impact on reducing inflammation.
Contains trace levels of the amino acids serine, valine, and leucine. These support the body with tissue repair, neurotransmitter balance, and metabolic signaling.
This might be my favorite- it contains minerals that are needed to fully utilize Vitamin C in the body. Potassium, calcium, iron, and zinc are all present in Camu Camu and are needed to use Vitamin C in the body. It shows that in a whole food source, you are not only getting Vitamin C but also what the body requires to use it effectively. (You don’t get this from synthetic Vitamin C- no matter how clean the supplement brand is)
Research has shown that Camu Camu also helps heal the gut due to the polyphenols it contains. They encourage beneficial flora to grow and support the intestinal barrier. This is why some people report feeling less bloated and stomach issues when taking Camu Camu, even if it was intentionally just intended for immune support.
Camu Camu is more than an excellent Vitamin C source; it is a whole food which brings so much more to our overall health than isolated supplements like ascorbic acid. I have made the swap in getting my Vitamin C support from Camu Camu, and have noticed the difference it has made in my overall health.
The brand and exact source I use is from Supreme Nutrition, which now drops ship directly from Amazon to save you money on shipping. You can read more Camu Camu from Supreme Nutrition here:
