Many women suffer from hormonal symptoms related to estrogen dominance. These symptoms are often blamed and thought of as the body making too much estrogen, but in most cases, the real issue isn’t an overproduction of estrogen but rather an issue with how well the body is clearing excess estrogen it no longer needs.
One of the most overlooked supports for healthy estrogen metabolism is artichoke leaf (Cynara scolymus), a bitter herb traditionally used to support the liver, digestion, and bile flow.
This article explores how artichoke supports estrogen clearance, the symptoms of sluggish estrogen metabolism, and why liver and gut health matter so much for hormonal balance.
Why Estrogen Clearance Matters
Estrogen is primarily metabolized via the liver, then excreted through bile into the intestines, and finally expelled through bowel movements. When our detox pathways are blocked or sluggish, due to resistant organisms, inflammation, nutritional deficiencies, stress, or overexposure to toxins, estrogen is unable to be metabolized correctly. This causes it to be reabsorbed in the body and, in turn, causes estrogen dominance symptoms.
We also live in a very toxic world. Everything from fragrances (phthalates), BPA's, pesticides and herbicides, and paper receipts causes a buildup of something called Xenoestrogens. These are synthetic compounds that bind to estrogen receptors, disrupt hormone signaling, and then accumulate in fat, the liver, and breast tissue. AKA: causing havoc on our hormone system.
What are the symptoms of estrogen dominance?
Some of the most common symptoms of estrogen dominance in women are heavy or painful periods, PMS, mood swings, irregular or amenorrhea (lack of period), PCOS symptoms, hormonal breast cysts, insomnia, or anxiety before menstruation. These are classical hormonal patterns when estrogen buildup occurs.
Physical symptoms include headaches or migraines, weight gain in the hips and thighs, hormonal acne (jawline or chin), hair thinning, bloating, puffiness in the face/neck, and fatigue.
Lastly, symptoms that can show slow or blocked detox pathways include constipation, poor fat digestion, nausea after rich meals, pale stools, and/or discomfort under the right rib cage.
And where this isn’t a symptom per se, it is a good time to mention that those who have had their gallbladder removed inherently have a decrease in bile flow. Leaving you more susceptible to sluggish detox pathways and estrogen dominance.
How does artichoke support estrogen clearance in the body?
There are 6 notable ways artichoke works to clear and balance estrogen in the body.
Opens liver detox pathways: the liver metabolizes estrogen so it can be eliminated once the body has enough. If our pathways are sluggish or we have an overburdened liver that can’t process our hormones, this is how the buildup occurs. The body has no choice but to recirculate it into our bloodstream. Artichoke stimulates liver enzymes, antioxidants that protect liver cells, and supports the byproducts of metabolized hormones.
Increases bile production: everything metabolized within the liver needs bile to be eliminated. If you have a sluggish gallbladder (where bile is stored to be used in the liver) or you have had your gallbladder removed, you may not have the most important tool to eliminate all toxins from your liver. Artichoke is considered a bitter, which stimulates bile flow. With good bile flow, estrogen can be eliminated rather than reabsorbed into the bloodstream.
Supports the gut and bowel movements: once bile is eliminated from the liver, it is dumped into the intestines. Artichoke helps stimulate the gut to move the waste efficiently so it can be eliminated via stool. It is so important for daily bowel movements and hormonal health! You can’t eliminate anything of excess without regular bowel movements.
Helps Estrogen Conjunction Pathways: Conjunction is the process of binding estrogen to molecules so it can be eliminated via bile and not recirculated. If this process does not occur due to a toxin overload, stress, inflammation, or nutrition deficiencies, the body can’t operate effectively, causing the excess buildup to occur. Artichoke helps conjugate estrogen by supporting glucuronidation and sulfation. Two liver pathways that bind and balance estrogen in the body.
Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory: Artichoke is a great antioxidant that is loved by the liver. Since excess estrogen usually leads to an inflamed liver, artichoke helps reduce the oxidative stress in the liver by protecting liver cells and supporting overall resilience. It indirectly supports the hormonal balance by supporting the liver, so it can do its job properly.
Improves the estrogen-progesterone balance: if there is an excess amount of estrogen in your body, it kinda becomes a hormone signaling hog, and can muffle the wonderful benefits of progesterone. (the calming, stabilizing feeling in the body). Artichoke helps bring balance to this hormonal relationship so estrogen and progesterone can work in union.
What Part of the Artichoke is Used?
Artichoke leaves are used specifically for stimulating bile flow and clearing estrogen, not the yummy artichoke hearts most of us enjoy with a good steak dinner. Artichoke leaves contain 3 main components that make it great for liver support in the body.
Cynarine- supports the liver to metabolize hormones by stimulating bile and bile production.
Chlorogenic acid- protects the liver from oxidative stress, decreases inflammation in the liver, and supports phase II pathways of detoxification
Luteolin- a flavonoid with anti-inflammatory properties, and has estrogen modulating properties (how estrogen is used and the uptake in our body)
How is artichoke consumed?
The main ways to consume artichoke leaves are teas, tinctures, and capsules. I personally like capsules and have taken this brand when I have done a clearance of estrogen. (You can check it out and decide with a trusted professional if it is right for you too!)
What you can expect from taking Artichoke
Signs that you are clearing estrogen after taking Artichoke:
A normal menstrual cycle (Many women have reported getting pregnant after taking artichoke, which is amazing for those struggling to conceive!)
Hormonal acne clears (jaw and chin)
Reduction of PMS symptoms
Decrease in insulin resistance
Regular bowel movements
Less bloating
Better stress tolerance and less anxiety
Deeper sleep and an overall calmer feeling (that's the progesterone getting a chance to shine!)
Important Considerations to Note
Artichoke should not be taken if a woman is pregnant, breastfeeding, or on HRT.
This is informational for you to better understand the benefits of estrogen elimination in the body and how artichoke leaves can support that. Always consult your trusted healthcare provider before starting anything new.
Individuals who have active gallstones or know of bile duct obstruction should proceed with caution and have medical oversight.
And remember, this is just a piece of the whole healing pie. Nutrition, lifestyle choices, and nervous system regulation have to be taken into account for true healing to occur.
